3 simple steps to story and photo preservation and organization. It is easier than you think.

Dust off the boxes of photos before you and yours become, “The Strangers in the Box.”

I will give you the easiest ways I know of minimizing the daunting task of what to do with those boxes of photos that have been stored away, or handed down or stumbled upon while cleaning out “Grandma’s Attic”.

It doesn’t matter if you do or do not know the people in the picture. Step number 1 has to be simple, otherwise, why even start?

Open the box – I told you it would be simple. Okay so that is not the only part of step one but it is truly the first step. Set a timer of 20 minutes. It may take multiple times working on your project but it doesn’t have to take multiple days. By the way, let’s keep it fun, if you are into self care and like doing home spas, now is the perfect time to pamper yourself. Facial anyone?) Now, facial and all, you will want to see what kind of condition the photos are in. Your goal is to keep them safe. If this is all you do, it is better than nothing. Find plastic containers that will prevent moisture and if you can, light from coming in or you could put them in a safe or you could scan them in and house them on an online photo storage site. Scanning can be tedious. I have found a high speed Kodak scanner at Target that is amazing and will cost very little to scan. You can scan around 100 pictures in 10 minutes. Some stores will have scanners available for you to use, or you may find an individual who is willing to do them for you. A group that I know of that is passionate about your stories and photos are Heritage Makers Consultants. You can use your own personal flatbed scanner, however, expect about 3 minutes a photo after you have scanned and saved them as a jpeg to a file on your computer. Basically, start by getting them in a safe holding place.

As you look through these pictures pull out the photos that you have a quick “moment” with. As in, when you look at the picture and it makes you smile and reminisce, put it in a pile or in one of the containers along with all the other photos that cause you to have a “moment”. Now, you may have a bunch of piles or just have two. Is your time up? If so, come back in two days and set the timer again. Tick, toc, tick, toc…. Grab the photos that you don’t recognize and put them in their “safe place” and toss out the ones that don’t have any significance. (I know it seems impossible, but you can do it. You really don’t need 8 shots of the same sunset). If you are sucker for knowledge of the past like me, place those photos of intriguing strangers in a “safe place” of their own for later.

Gather sticky notes, a felt tip marker, a notebook and pencil or pen, or voice recorder or video camera. For the photos that you recognize, place a number on a post it note and stick it to the back of a photo. Then choose your pick of how you want to document, paper and pen are usually the easiest. There are some amazing technology tools that you can use as well. There is pen called the “smart pen” and some recording software that will do word recognition on your computer so you won’t have to retype everything if you wanted to journal. With sticky paper technique you will put the same number on the notebook paper that is posted to the back of the picture and write the memory or the story behind the photo. Always document the date of when you are working on story preservation and put your name on the top of the paper.

With these 3 easy steps of photo organization and story preservation you will be on your way in no time. You may even feel inspired to keep going and grab the box of photos that are strangers to you and ask around in the family to see who might know who they are and move on to creating a family storybook. If you do, this is when you bring your voice recorder or your choice of documentation device. The last thing you want is for someone from your next generation to find these photos with no background story attached to it.

Imagine… you will be the bridge for the youth of your next generation of your family’s morals and values. You will play a huge part in strengthening the bonds and connections from the past to the future. You have the opportunity to assist in building the self esteem in your children of the future. When they know the history of their family or the morals, values and traditions of what their family believes in these children will feel a sense of belonging to something bigger than themselves and they will want to strive to be “like” what it means to be part of their family. You, my friend, it is time. It doesn’t seem so hard now to dust off the box does it? If you don’t do it, who will? Remember, it really is that easy.

I want to say thank you to the wonderful women and Grandma at the park this morning. The boys and I were on a wonderful little walk that turned into an unexpected long walk. Lunch time was quickly approaching and I had not anticipated a need to bring a snack because we had embarked on a short walk. Needless to say, lunch time was approaching quickly and Grant, almost 2, was reminding everyone at the park he was getting hungry. A very generous sweet little girl, offered to share her colored fishy’s with Grant. Of course, Grant asked for more when he was finished and the beautiful little girl’s Grandmother offered some more crackers. Grant was someone upset when I placed him in the stroller thinking he had what he wanted right here at the park and was now, NOT, ready to leave. It may have seemed like a small gesture but we are very appreciative of your kindness. Grant made it home just in time to each his lunch and fall asleep during his last bite….

Thank you again!

Tips and Tricks for Canvas Creation

1. Our canvases are beautifully hand-made right here in the USA

2. Because they are lovingly hand-made in all kinds of temperatures, expect the canvas to wrap just a little bit differently every time.

3. Lynda suggests, because of these slight variances that you NOT use borders narrower than ¾ inch to an inch and that you place text or embellishments about ¾ inch to an inch to away from the canvas edge, unless it is something that you want to bleed all the way off the canvas. This way if the wrap is 1/16 inch one way or the other, it won’t impact your design at all.

4. If you are making a multiple-canvas set, send them all to be printed at the same time. (In the same way you try to buy yarn from the same dye lot.) Printing sets one canvas at a time, may otherwise give you slight variations in color.

5. Our canvas is very forgiving. You can stretch a photo way into the orange, almost to red and it will print beautifully on canvas.

6. Studio art is the same way. Take a 12 x 12 paper up to 24 x 24 and it will print beautifully from Studio, no matter what color your outside border becomes.

7. If you do use a 12 x 12 paper to cover a 24-inch span, DON’T crop it or put a fill or transparency on it. Just let it sit there. Crops or effects on art or photos over 11.99 inches can causing printing problems during production.

8. There are many background papers in Studio, already and coming soon for Reunion, that look beautiful with NOTHING else on the canvas. (See attached images Wendy1 (On the Beach 1 and 2), Wendy2 (sneak peek of Ceder Creek coming in August), Wendy3 (Old Tackle box Papers).

9. Many of Studio’s canvas sizes were designed to work together. Put an 8 x 20 either side of a 20 x 20 or use the nine-piece canvas set in the Template Gallery.

10. For a full-bleed photographic canvas, select a photo with lots of room around the edge of your subject. You’ll need that “extra” space for the canvas wrap.

11. To access the popular nine-piece canvas collection in our Template Gallery, put the word “group” into the Template Gallery “Search-by-Keyword” search. Twelve templates will come up-the nine original canvases and two alternate center canvases (a bible quote and an inspirational quote if you’d rather use those than the Gordon B. Hinckley quote). This version of the canvas collection uses a matched pattern size across all canvases and has a one-inch border for a more consistent result across all your hand-wrapped canvases. (See attached images.)

12. Other “Lynda” picks from Template Gallery: (And watch for tons more stunning canvases being released in conjunction with Reunion August 12)
